Ken Burgess

President – LT Ken Burgess

Ken Burgess is a long-time XC and Track athlete, competing in DIII XC nationals while in college (2000) and earning All New England honors. After college his focus has been on longer distance races, including a 2:40 PR in the Napa Valley Marathon (10), a 3rd place finish in a 50 mile ultra (Ice Age, WI 07), and a ½ ironman in 4:33 (Steelhead, 06).  He has also paced several marathons and half marathons at 3:00 and 1:30 respectively.  Ken continues to mentor tomorrow’s runners as coach to the Piedmont Middle School XC team for the past 3 seasons (07-09).  While in Ann Arbor Ken helped organize the Tuesday Night running group from Tortoise and Hare.  In Oakland Ken held the position of Communications and Social events director for the Lake Merritt Joggers and Striders from Aug 08 – Aug 09.  Ken has an affinity for org charts, over tasking himself, and unnecessary standardization of processes making him a great fit for the running club board.

Bio: Jason ran track in High School (mostly 400 and pole vault)  and one year of Cross Country during his freshman year of college. He never really got into running until after he left Mass Maritime.  In 2006, Jason was invited to run a Half Marathon in New Bedford, Massachusetts. After partaking in various  St Patty’s Day festivities in Boston all weekend, he borrowed some girl’s shoes, various running attire and lined up on race day. With little training and borrowed gear, he finished in 1:46. Although he was hurting afterwards, it sparked his passion for running and he has been running and training ever since. Jason ran numerous short distance road races, ½ marathns,  and local cross country races back in Vermont.  He has also run two full marathons, most recently qualifying for Boston in the San Francisco marathon. The PAUSATF Season with the Coast Guard Running Club has been his first real competitive Cross Country Season. Jason  has also dabbled in sprint triathlons, a 12 hour adventure Race, and competitive Ski Randonee racing. His Future Goals include developing the USCG Running Club into a fully recognized club, with Coast Guard Support for national competitions, and to help create a better culture of fitness and well being in the Coast Guard. Personally, he would like to run marathons in every state, the Vermont 100,  and ride his bike across the country.

College: University of Tennessee (Volunteers)
Favorite Runs: C&O Canal (DC), Redwood Trails, CA, Greenfield Lake, Wilmington NC,  and Central Park, NY.

Charlie feels lucky to reside in the Bay Area and has the benefit of both training partners and an unmatched training environment. Balancing his time between triathlons and running, Charlie is shooting for PRs in both the half marathon and half ironman in 2010.

Excited about the future of Coast Guard Running and the growth of the Club, Charlie strives to reach out to the greater running community to organize races throughout the country.  If you’re interested in organizing a race in your city or community, please ask the CG Running Club for assistance. His goal is support a vast network of races that help raise money for non-profit and charities while encouraging participation in CG sponsored events!

Web Master – LT Nathan Menefee

Nate is A web 2.0 guy, with multiple blogs, an iphone, but suprisingly no GPS watch?  A Merchant Marine graduate who came in to the Coast Guard to make a difference Nate finds solace putting miles under his feet.  Feel free to contact him if you have additions for the website at nathan@runuscg.org.

Treaserer – LT Jeremy Yandell

The thriftiest of thrifty, Jeremy has yet to put the pen to the checkbook without first needing 10 forms of reconciliation.  Beyond that, he’s also pretty darned quick, although his abilities at distances longer than 10k are unknown due to his phobia of that half marathon and beyond domain.  Jeremy is a 2006 Graduate of the USCGA where he competed in XC, indoor and outdoor track.  Jeremy excelled at attempting to carry on team traditions.

    Hey guys,

Just found you online; this is an awesome idea. I’m toying with the idea of getting a race team/club going for the Canadian Coast Guard. Can you provide me with the email address of someone who can give me more info on how you guys started out?

    Cheers,

    – Kyra
