Rob On The Run
Hey run clubbers. I got a great email today from one of our SF Bay Area members. He’s started his own blog. While some people track training through online tools and others use diaries, Rob has started www.RobOnTheRun.org Reading his first post may just increase the number of e-resumes for jobs near there by 10% this next year. Who doesn’t want almost perfect weather year round and a huge running community?

Are you a club member who also have a blog (about running – or at least loosely related to fitness)? Send it to admin@runuscg.org to get it published here.
USCGRC Address Book Update
An email has gone out to members about updating profiles, but in case you missed it for some reason this post is for you! Please login and update your member profile so we can ensure your 2012 RRCA Club Running magazine gets to you. Each year when we renew we send our updated membership roster to the RRCA. Unlike other clubs, we face the unique challenge of having a gypsy like membership, never in one place for a long time. It’s possible that after 3 years in the game, we’re already two addresses behind for some of our membership. By logging in we’ll know you’re interested in continuing your affiliation with the club, so use the link to the right (and hit the forgot password if you need to).
What do we get from being RRCA members? Lots. A nationwide network of runners much larger then the Coast Guard, insurance for our club leaders and our events, subscriptions to club running magazine and our ability to continue as a non-profit, a key part of our ability to gain sponsorship and partner with other organizations.
Tom’s Run 2012 Underway
Dear Tom’s Run Friends, Family, and Lovers – Tom’s Run 2012 is officially underway. This year’s 200-mile team relay starts on June 2 in Cumberland MD at the beginning of the C&O Canal Towpath and ends June 3 at Fort Hunt in Alexandria VA. If you aren’t familiar with Tom’s Run, visit our simple, yet cozy, web site at www.tomsrunrelay.org. Tom’s Run is unique. We hold Tom’s Run to honor our shipmate CWO4 Tom Brooks – a big believer in community. Consequently, instead of starting at the same time, the teams plan to finish at the same time – 1100 on Sunday 3 June. Think about it…start whenever you want, just plan to finish with everyone else. It’s quite a logistical challenge that builds and bonds teams. And because there is no start time, anyone could participate from anywhere. A few years ago, a soldier in Iraq ran a 6 mile leg, phoned his waiting team on the trail, and off they went. In fact, we have a committment from a Coastie in Bahrain. We would love to have some remote teams join us and Skype as we all run and bike down the 200-mile course to come together at the end. Write, call, facebook, whatever – be a part of Tom’s Run. See you on the trail – Roger Butturini, 202-372-1494, admin@tomsrunrelay.org, roger.k.butturini@uscg.mil.
L2L Results
It was rainy, the course was confusing, and the bathrooms never got unlocked by Parks and Recreation (not for lack of trying by Seattle – we commend the effort), but 8 teams managed to brave the Viaduct closure and impossible to find exchanges finding their way to Commodore Park and quickly leaving to head together to the West Point Lighthouse. Did everything go perfectly? Absolutely not, but a good time was had by all, even the 4 participants who ran along Elliot Ave, braving the 6 lane traffic crossing to get back on course.
Results can be found on the D13 page under L2L here: http://runuscg.org/chapters/d13/l2l
We promise to have more volunteers, more sunshine (well we don’t actually promise that) better prizes and more teams to compete with next year. MFPU with the big unit win this year gets free entry next year and the right to display the coveted L2L trophy at their unit until next year. The other division winners (womens, mixed, and mens) received a TRX Force Kit as well as some home-made cookies and goodies from a local running store.
A few teams, even some that ventured to the lighthouse (good job!) made their way to the post celebration for a quick beer and some refueling in the form of burgers and fries. Pictures from the event can be found by going to our photos link or here: https://picasaweb.google.com/RUNUSCG/L2L2011

COO to run Marathon at Oakland A’s Game
On Friday 16 September 2011 Luke Petersen (Club Chief Operating Officer) will be attempting to run a marathon during the Oakland A’s game. While it sounds a bit crazy – and it is – it should also be a lot of fun. He will start the treadmill when the first pitch is thrown and will try to complete 26.2 miles before the game ends.
The press release goes like this: Race The Game: On Sept. 16, Lieutenant Luke Petersen of the Coast Guard will attempt to finish a marathon on a treadmill behind the outfield wall during the A’s vs. Tigers game. Fans can receive $6 off Plaza Outfield tickets by using the code “Marathon” online at oaklandathletics.com/tickets. Peterson is the chief operating officer of the Coast Guard Running Club and has finished five marathons with a best time of 2:55:16. For every minute that Peterson finishes the marathon before the end of the A’s game, the Oakland Running Festival will discount registration by $1 per minute, up to $20. The Third Annual Oakland Running Festival is scheduled for March 25, 2012, for more information please visit www.oaklandmarathon.com.
If you are interested in attending, come on out and cheer me on. Go to oaklandathletics.com/tickets and use the code “MARATHON.” The game starts at 7:30.
Tom’s Run 2011 a big success
This year’s Tom’s Run was another big success despite being the 13th annual event. It turned out to be an ominous number because we lost our HQ MWR sponsorship just months before the event. We were saved by the CWOA and partnered with the CGRC to keep this great event alive. This year, we had 27 teams and over 400 participants. Down from 35 teams last year, but still a huge success. We also thought we would have a handful of solo runners as in past years, but they had to cancel. The course is beautiful, the challenges are real, and the fun is unmatched. Summer Stand Down

We are in the midst of summer and transfer season. Hopefully the lack of activity online does not mimic the activity in the real world. Emails have been flowing in freely to RUNUSCG and the club recently. For the last month we’ve been on Summer Stand Down, meaning most of our clubs leadership has been worrying about finding a house, learning a new area and job, and most importantly, charting new running routes through unfamiliar neighborhoods and parks. So the store has been taken down until we can find a new CONUS apparel manager willing to put together orders and ship them out (our last one moved OCONUS and shipping costs made keeping the job impracticle). During Stand Down we maintain our focus on supporting our signature events, and as the leadership settles we reboot to bring the club through the next year.
Over the break we’ve continued to work with the Coast Guard Heritage Run in D11 – This event has brought onboard two unsolicited sponsors in Sports Basement and TRX. With the post run BBQ, the views from the Golden Gate bridge during the race, and the precise planning of the stations volunteers it’s turning out to be our clubs premier West Coast Event.
A reminder to all club members to update your online profile, this is where we will mail any club information, and we pass the district rosters to the local club representatives for use in disseminating key USCGRC information – like upcoming team events and relays.
If you’ve been waiting for a reply from the club, we’re working diligently through the backlog of correspondence – be patient, we’re happy you’re interested.
