During the weekend of April 16-17, Team 1790 participated in the annual Baker 2 Vegas Relay run competing against federal agencies from across the nation.  The team included members from LA-Long Beach and San Diego with active duty members, reservists, and auxiliarists supporting this event.  B2V involved over 200 law enforcement agencies and spanned 120 miles across the desert.

This event started for the CG at noon on Saturday and ended at around 0500 early Sunday morning.  With five female members on the team, the team entered into the Mixed division.  Under this division, the CG team placed 16 out of 26.  Overall, the team placed 132 out of 259.  Last year they placed 188, bumping up 56 spots from last year, a huge improvement for the team.  Although they did not get the highly coveted mugs for the top contenders, they improved from last year with no air-lifts to the hospital and no penalty minutes.

This relay is the largest law enforcement event of its kind with teams spanning from Hamburg, Germany and Calgary Canada.   Starting in 1985 a couple of LAPD members, this has become a highly competitive event with members training throughout the year for in order to be a Challenge Cup Winner.  The relay begins in Baker, California, rolling through the hills in the desert, and ending along the Vegas strip to the Hilton hotel.

Team 1790′s participation was dedicated to CG members who lost their lives this past year during routine missions that resulted in unforeseen accidents.  The baton team members ran with reminded them of who they were running for.

This was truly a team effort with countless volunteers and CG Auxiliarists supporting the event.  The team’s successful participation would not have been possible without the CG Auxiliarists handling the complicated logistics encompassing the event.  Our team captains PO Michael Lesley and LT Bill Burwell led the team well and next year will undoubtedly prove to be even better!
