Headlands 100
100 Miles – The Headlands Hundred 7 Aug 2010

| From USCG Running Club |
USCGRC member Skip Crockett takes to the hills for this exciting race. Having completed multiple 50 mile races, the PACAREA member is one of the most versatile runners in the chapter also competing in the Holiday Mile and PAUSATF XC Grand Prix. Skip keeps it real, he recently competed in a fitness challenge on Treasure Island. If you’re out today feeling bad while running a 10 miler, chin up you could be running 100 miles!
Update (Race Recap):
As the sun rose over the Golden Gate Bridge, Skip Crockett hobbled down the last mile of his first Headland’s 100. After a day and a night of looping around the Headlands four times on a trail that gained and eventually dropped 5,000 ft per lap, the sight of the finish was pure joy for these ultra harriers. Danny Neverosky, a Naval Post Graduate student, capitalized on his light academic load to train for the one of the most grueling ultras on this planet. Not even a wrong turn around mile 85 would stop Danny from his destiny. In the end, both runners earned the coveted “Headlands 100 Coaster” and of course the right to look down on mere marathoners! Way to go lads! Read a full account here

The Coast Guard has shown great strength and depth this spring with participation in many team events. The CGRC exists to network the individuals so that even after transfer season our teams are able to mobilize quickly and efficiently and our talent pool isn’t lost in the lengthy familiarization process associated with PCS transfers. In the future, the consistent socialization of club accomplishments should help to motivate and maintain CG presence in the running community service wide.

WE NEED TEAM CAPTAINS! Volunteer to organize a team and get a free USCG Running Club tech shirt.
If interested in captaining a CG team contact admin@runuscg.org for more information as we have planning materials from previous years, including MWR funding requests, leg tracking planners, motorpool access and more – we’ll make it easy for you! For starters use the forum to give updates to the team sparing mass emails and raising visibility of the planning and fun to the whole club! This is one of the most fun events because it is relatively small team, it’s on a saturday, and you can get a cabin real cheap in Tahoe to celebrate the days race before heading back on Sunday. This is a truly great race, at a great price, and for a good cause – all right in our back yard!
CG Competes at USATF XC Nationals
Four USCG Athletes competed in Saturdays Armed Forces Championships in Spokane, WA. LT Ken Burgess (Open Men – Oakland), LT Laura Springer (Open Women – Seattle), LT Emily Reuter (Headquarters), and AETCM Michael Ferreira (Masters Men – Barbers Point). These Coasties were selected to compete on the All Navy Sports XC Team, coached by Jim Felty and organized by Mr. James Senn. In addition to the hard work by these members, thanks go out to Steve and Kent who helped herd the team and a job well done to the rest of the Navy competitors. On our side of the fence, thanks to CWO Downs and Mr. Gary Scheer for their efforts in putting together CG participation in the championships. Results can be found here and photos here. More photos will be posted as they are received from other participants and friends.
“The Relay” Teams Forming
“The Relay” Teams are forming now. Contact admin@runuscg.org for more details.
Sailors with a Running Problem returns this year to improve upon it’s 9th overall and 2nd Law Enforcement divsion place from 2009. In addition to 12 runners teams typically have 2 drivers and require 2 volunteers to fill 5 hour shifts on race weekend. Use the Forum to find teammates and get organized – it’s lonely.
More information on “the relay” can be found at www.therelay.org A special web page is in the works to keep our running club teams informed about important dates, training tips, fundraising, and logistics.
We will utlize our sister club, Lake Merritt Joggers and Striders, weekly saturday training runs as part of our preparatory program. This was a successfull practice carried over from last year where members of the team could get together and go on varied runs, ranging in length, organized by LMJS with multiple different pace groups to meet everyones needs. More information can be found at http://www.lmjs.org/LMJS_training_runs_schedule
USCGRC Excels at Berkeley Track Meet
On Saturday 16 January 2010 the NorCal Chapter of the USCG Running Club fielded one competitor at the Cal All Comers Track Meet held in Berkeley, CA (PAUSATF). Patrick Fernandez toed the line against collegiate and open field competitors for the 1500m race. Patrick ran a calculated race, coming through the 800m mark in 2:10 and finishing in a highly respectable 4:15. Patrick has been doing double speed workouts, Mondays and Wednesdays, at the Piedmont track and one spectator from the crowd commented that, “Pat’s just starting to get fast – he’s intense and looking to get much faster”. We can only hope that’s true as Pat is now the lead scorer for the Coast Guard in PAUSATF Track and Field.
Join Pat, and others, for workouts – check back often for updates
